Why do you think they can settle in a horror setting if they’re under 18?: As a dystopian sci-fi protagonist, Shion has been "through hell and back," as Nezumi calls it. While raised in an exceedingly sheltered environment, he was abruptly thrust into the dark and unpleasant side of the world after leaving No. 6, and experienced corruption, cruelty, and torture firsthand. He's witnessed a manhunt with his own eyes, seen countless people slaughtered before him, climbed a pile of corpses and dying people, nearly died several times, been shot, had to face the truth that his city has been using people as hosts for parasitic wasps, lost his best friend to the city's human experimentation, kind of maybe murdered someone... This is nothing he hasn't seen before.

Canon Abilities/Powers: Shion may not have any supernatural powers, but he does have a couple of abilities!

Intellect: Shion's intellect puts him in the top 1% of society in No. 6. At the age of two, he was placed in the class of "highest-ranked intelligence" and certified as an elite citizen, which meant that everything in life was given to him. Raised to hone this intelligence for the good of society, he's an encyclopedia of knowledge, especially when it comes to science, biology, geography, and ecology (his major). Since he was taught to take everything he can and absorb it as knowledge, he values learning and is extremely curious about things he doesn't know. Of course, this means that he bombards people (read: Nezumi) with questions a little too often, which Nezumi drags him for time and time again.

This only extends to book smarts, however. For example, Shion had "basic knowledge" of suturing vessels at the age of 12 (what are they teaching you, child), but often makes airheaded comments and originally had absolutely zero street smarts. He's gotten better, though!

Memorization: In conjunction with his intelligence, Shion is particularly adept at memorization. He can recall things he's only seen once, such as long strings of letters or numbers, and if he actively studies something, he's able to memorize it in astonishing detail. For example, he flawlessly memorized a map of the multi-floored correctional facility all the way down to the locations of the trash cans, and neither he nor Nezumi would have stood a chance at surviving if he had misremembered even the slightest detail.

Aside from this, he adapts quickly to harsh environments as long as people he cares about are there to pick him up, and is able to fight on in circumstances that others may break under. Also, children and animals notably love him! Aww.

What is their greatest negative emotion towards an object, situation, or person in their past?: While Shion is generally a kind and softhearted person, his highly emotional nature and love of the people around him makes him volatile, and he can become uncharacteristically cruel when those he loves are in endangered. When he realized that his dear friend Safu had been captured and brought to the West Block's correctional facility, he immediately flew into an illogical frenzy and insisted on saving her from a situation that would almost certainly end in not only her death, but his own. It's at times like these that he'll do literally anything to protect those he loves, throwing his logic aside to act entirely on his emotions even if it challenges his morals in the end. He's the type to run into a burning building to save someone without ever considering the consequences of his actions – if something is important to him, everything else in the world falls away.

It's likely that the reason his emotions are so out of control during these times is because he simply doesn't know how to handle them. Shion claims that he was occasionally "overwhelmed by a tumultuous, savage surge of emotions" in No.6 (stemming from his distrust of the city and the feeling of being oppressed), but he never acted on them, living while being sheltered from true fear or sorrow. As such, when he's cornered and his emotions suddenly heighten, he doesn't know how to control them in a rational way.

Most notably, Shion becomes completely unhinged when Nezumi is in danger. When a man from the West Block suggested that Nezumi sell his body for money, Shion abruptly tackled him to a couch and tried to strangle him, having to be pulled off of his body before realizing what he'd done. When he encountered the tribe living beneath the correctional facility and a man named Sasori attempted to kill Nezumi, Shion snapped and tried to suffocate him with thin wire, darkly saying that it was his "punishment" and that he would do it time and time again if Nezumi was in danger.

And, you know, he kind of maybe knowingly murdered someone who shot Nezumi, picking up a stray gun and shooting him with perfect accuracy in his rage. That too.

How aware are they of this negative emotion, and how do they act on it in canon?: Oh boy! As of his canon point, Shion regularly suffers from nightmares about the horrors he's seen, and can still go back to that time and vividly see the bodies and death when he closes his eyes. He's very, very aware of the darkness within him, and it makes him terribly uneasy since it's so different from his usual personality.

And that's not all, because let me tell you how much this boy can't deal when faced with something he did with his own hands. Immediately after shooting and killing an elite officer of No. 6, Shion was able to completely separate himself from the situation and feel a wave of relief that Nezumi was alive, even smiling brightly and tending his wounds like nothing had happened. As soon as Nezumi pointed out that he'd just murdered someone, though, the reality of the situation came crashing down upon him. What he did was justified and basically self-defense – Nezumi tells him so, but Shion nearly had a complete mental breakdown as a result, even raising the barrel of the gun to his own head before Nezumi lunged at him. It's cyclical, almost – Shion loses control for Nezumi's sake, and Nezumi is the one that snaps him back to reality.

Additionally, Shion slowly begins to lose hold on his morals once again in the epilogue of the novel, stating that he needs Nezumi to be with him as his anchor. Through this and the aforementioned points, it's safe to say that Shion realizes that he needs Nezumi by his side to be able to withstand the harshness of the world.

What is their greatest virtue?: Honestly, in a world where there aren't many people like him, Shion's genuine kindness and selflessness stand out. Shion is kind to everyone whether they deserve it or not: friends, strangers, and those that wish to harm him alike (though he claims to be a good judge of character and usually steers himself out of trouble when he can). He doesn't place himself above or below others, and tries to view situations objectively and with an open heart, even if others call him naïve.

The story is set into motion when Shion, on his twelfth birthday, finds an injured, runaway boy (Nezumi) trying to take refuge in his room. Rather than feel fear, Shion is intrigued by him, even getting excited rather than intimidated when Nezumi pins him down and immobilizes him. Of course, he's well aware taking Nezumi in is breaking the city's rules, but Shion doesn't think twice before allowing Nezumi to stay with him for the night, suturing his wounds and offering him food and shelter. And true to his word, he doesn't feel an ounce of regret when he's found out and exiled from the elite city of Chronos, kicked out of the special program and forced to relocate to the poor area of No. 6.

Even in his teenage years, Shion is just as giving and softhearted, trying to see the good in everyone no matter the circumstances. Even in the harsh West Block where everyone has to fend for themselves, he treats everyone he meets with kindness... much to the displeasure of Nezumi, who claims he'll get killed one day for caring too much about others.

How aware are they of their virtue, and how do they act on it in canon?:
Shion is very aware of this side of himself, and while he recognizes that it's helpful at times, he doesn't always see it as a good thing. It really can be a downfall in addition to a virtue, making him inexperienced and weak in a world that won't think twice about taking advantage of him or stabbing him in the back, but Shion can't turn off his emotions. Nezumi tells him to throw away his feelings and kindness, claiming that they're only baggage that will drag him down, but Shion insists that his deep-rooted emotions are what make him who he is.

And he's right! In No.6 and even more so in the West Block, idealistic dreamers like Shion are extremely out of place. But even though it gets him in trouble from time to time, he wouldn't have survived without moving people with his altruistic, caring personality. In many ways, he's well aware that his behavior sets him apart from others, even if he's often called strange because of it.

As the story progresses, Shion is able to evolve and lose some of his naivety while keeping his kind heart. Living with Nezumi has given him many new emotional experiences, and Shion himself says that he would have never realized what type of person he was if he hadn't run away from No. 6. He's both proud and thankful that he’s quickly becoming less innocent and oblivious about the world. He'll always be the clumsy, gentle, and faithful Shion he's been from the start, but being with Nezumi has given him outlets to express a wide-range of emotions that he'd never had a chance to truly experience to their full extent before.
